The most far-reaching pension reform legislation in 13 years was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Trump as part of the budget bill funding the federal government for the remainder of the fiscal year. The Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement Act of 2019 (SECURE) was added as Division O to the Further Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2020 (H.R. 1865). Of critical importance to plan sponsors: The effective dates in the original bill were left unchanged. As a result, many of the new law’s provisions are effective January 1, 2020.
